Is therapy right for me?
Going to therapy or choosing a therapist can seem daunting the first time. Do not get overwhelmed by the details, you do not need to know about each approach nor do you have to decide which one would suit you best, that’s our job!
If you are curious about different kinds of therapies or what we do, here are a few approaches that we are skilled at using at PsychLine.in.
Psychotherapy
It is a treatment in which a trained professional or a therapist uses psychological techniques to help individuals overcome psychological difficulties or disorders, resolve problems in everyday living, or bring about personal growth.
Psychoanalytic Approach
Here, problematic feelings, thoughts, and behaviours are targeted by tapping the unconscious mind. It focuses on the past as well as the unconscious desires and motivations. It uses methods like dream interpretation, free association, and exploring childhood memories to elicit deep intrapsychic conflicts.
Humanistic and Existential Approach
Here, psychological distress is believed to arise from an inability to find meaning and genuine fulfillment in life. Since individuals are motivated by the desire for personal growth and self-actualisation according to Humanists, a permissive, non-judgmental and accepting atmosphere is created.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
It is one of the most popular therapies in today’s time and has multifold application in a variety of challenges with proven efficacy. It combines cognitive therapy with behavioural techniques. It is a comprehensive technique in the sense that it addresses biological aspects through relaxation procedures, psychological ones through cognitive and behavioural therapy techniques and social ones with environmental manipulations.
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)
The very first step in the process is to identify the underlying, irrational thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that lead to psychological distress. Once these underlying feelings have been identified, the next step is to challenge the mistaken beliefs.

What is counseling?

Who is a psychologist?
A psychologist is a professional who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders, emotional disturbances, and behavioural problems.
When should I seek therapy?
Contrary to common misconception, therapy is not just for those who are struggling with mental illnesses. It can be beneficial to anyone who is experiencing stress, intense emotions, or life transitions, and wants to improve their mental health in any way. It is advised that if a problem is distressing and/or interfering with some aspect of life, one should reach out for help.
What is the difference between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
Psychiatrists on one hand are trained medical doctors who can prescribe medicines; Psychologists on the other are trained mental health professionals who focus extensively on psychometric testing, talk therapy, psychotherapy, and cannot prescribe medication. Thus, Psychiatrists and Psychologists have different educational backgrounds, training, and roles in treatment. However, they often work together in different settings under the mental health team.
Do I have to take medicines with counseling?
The short answer is No. It is a choice. However, different kinds of problems demand different kind of treatment methods. Often, therapy is used in combination with medication. But not every problem requires one to take medicines, and seeing a therapist does not mean you would be given pills. In fact, psychologists specialize in therapy and cannot prescribe medication. So unless you choose to be referred to a Psychiatrist, you do not have to worry about taking pills.
Will I be labeled “crazy”?
We understand the Indian culture. Due to the stigma and lack of awareness that surrounds mental health, counseling, and psychotherapy, many people refrain from reaching out even when they most certainly need it. However, regardless of your reasons for seeing a therapist, there is nothing wrong with it and no qualified therapist at PsychLine.in will ever label you crazy! In fact, therapists are trained to create a non-judgmental and accepting platform for their clients.
Will my information be shared with others?
Confidentiality is a respected part of Psychology’s code of ethics. Laws are in place to protect your privacy. Your therapist knows that in order for you to feel comfortable and share openly, your information is safe. You can always talk to your therapist about the confidentiality agreement during sessions. Only in case of threat to self, others or in cases of abuse comes a discussion of breaking confidentiality, but please be assured, your information is otherwise protected from everyone else.
Is online therapy effective?
Yes, online therapy is effective. It has its perks like convenience and affordability. Especially amidst this concerning time of the pandemic, online counseling has proven to be extremely helpful. However, it cannot be substituted for face-to-face sessions in all cases, and please know that your therapist at PsychLine.in won’t be able to make any official diagnosis, to fulfill any court order or prescribe medication.
